The 4th term of an arithmetic progression (AP) is $11$ and the 9th term is $31$.
(a) Find the first term and the common difference.
(b) Find the sum of the first $n$ terms.
(c) Find the least value of $n$ for which $S_n$ exceeds $324$.
Write down the first term $a$ and the common difference $d$ of the AP $5, 7, 9, 11, \dots$

$u_n=a+(n-1)d$. Count the steps from the first term carefully — it is $(n-1)$ steps, not $n$.
The 4th term is $a + 3d$, not $a + 4d$. Where does the $-1$ in $u_n = a + (n-1)d$ come from? Test the formula on $n = 1$ and say in one phrase what $(n-1)$ counts.

Between the 1st and the 4th term there are three gaps, not four. Getting this wrong shifts every equation by one $d$ and both simultaneous equations stay perfectly solvable, so the answer is wrong and nothing looks wrong. The M1 pays for two equations of the right shape; it never checks the offset.
The 6th term of an AP with first term $a$ and common difference $d$ is $20$. Write down an equation connecting $a$ and $d$.

Solve the simultaneous equations $a+3d=11$ and $a+8d=31$ to find $a$ and $d$.

Subtract the equations to eliminate $a$ first — this is the step that is easy to drop under exam pressure. Only then substitute back for $a$.
You have $a + 3d = 11$ and $a + 8d = 31$: two equations, two unknowns. Which single move removes $a$ in one line, and what does it leave? Compare with rearranging one equation for $a$ and substituting — which is fewer lines here, and why?

The circled ① and ② are just labels for the two equations, and "② − ①" is read "equation two minus equation one". Both equations carry exactly one $a$, which is the condition under which subtraction is free. Substitution reaches the same place three lines later with three more chances to drop a sign. The A1 is for $a$ and $d$; the route is worth nothing and is the only thing that decides whether you finish inside the time.
Write down the formula for $S_n$, the sum of the first $n$ terms of an AP with first term $a$ and common difference $d$.
Answershow ▾
Learn this one — it is not derivable quickly under time pressure.
Using $a=-1$ and $d=4$, write $S_n=\dfrac{n}{2}[2a+(n-1)d]$ as a simplified expression in $n$.

Given $S_n=2n^2 - 3n$, find the least value of $n$ for which $S_n$ exceeds $324$.
Answershow ▾
Solve the quadratic inequality, take the positive root, then round UP to the next whole number — $n$ counts terms, so it cannot be a decimal, and rounding down would leave $S_n$ still below the target.
$S_n \gt 324$ leads to $n \gt 13.5$. Which of $13$, $13.5$ and $14$ is the answer? Is the rule "round to the nearest" or something else — and would your rule still be right if the boundary had come out at $13.2$?

$n$ counts terms, so it can only be a whole number, and $n = 13$ does not yet exceed $324$. Rounding to the nearest agrees here by luck and disagrees at $13.2$, where it gives $13$ and $S_{13}$ is still short. The A1 pays for $14$; nothing pays for the rule that produced it.$n$ นับจำนวนพจน์ จึงเป็นจำนวนเต็มเท่านั้น และ $n = 13$ ยังไม่เกิน $324$ · การปัดเข้าใกล้ที่สุดบังเอิญตรงกันในข้อนี้ แต่จะไม่ตรงที่ $13.2$ ซึ่งจะได้ $13$ ทั้งที่ $S_{13}$ ยังไม่ถึง · A1 ให้กับ $14$ ไม่มีใครให้คะแนนกับกฎที่ผลิตมันออกมา

A negative ratio still shrinks the terms as long as it is small; $-\frac{3}{4}$ converges and $-1$ does not. The condition is printed in the question rather than derived, so it looks like decoration — and it is the line that later throws out one of the two roots of the quadratic in $r$.

A different GP has first term $a = 12$ and common ratio $r = \frac{1}{4}$. Find its sum to infinity.

Practise the substitution on numbers that are not the ones you are hunting — $S_\infty = \dfrac{12}{1 - 1/4} = \dfrac{12}{3/4} = 16$.
Eliminate $a$ from $ar=-12$ and $\dfrac{a}{1-r}=27$ to form a quadratic equation in $r$, and solve it.

From the first equation $a=\dfrac{-12}{r}$; substituting into the second and clearing fractions gives a quadratic in $r$ with two roots.

Only one root can be the common ratio of a convergent GP — check $|r| \lt 1$ for each and discard the one that fails. That is part (a) complete.
Part (b) asks for the sum of the FIRST $n$ TERMS, and you now have $a = 36$ and $r = -\frac{1}{3}$. Which formula is it this time — $S_n$ or $S_\infty$ — and does the answer come out as a number or as an expression still containing $n$?

Two sum formulas sit side by side in the formula book and the words "to infinity" are the only thing separating them.
