Differentiation · tangents and normals
A curve has equation $y = 2x^2 - x + \dfrac{3}{x^2}$. The point $P$ on the curve has $x = 1$.
(a) Find $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$.
(b) Find the equation of the tangent to the curve at $P$.
(c) Find the equation of the normal to the curve at $P$, giving your answer in the form $ax + by = c$, where $a$, $b$ and $c$ are integers.

You cannot differentiate $\dfrac{k}{x^2}$ as it stands — rewrite it as $kx^{-2}$ first. This is the step most students skip and then get stuck.
The question gives $P$ by its $x$-coordinate alone: $x = 1$. A straight line through $P$ needs two numbers about $P$ and one more besides. Which of $y = 2x^2 - x + \dfrac{3}{x^2}$ and $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$ gives you the missing coordinate of $P$, and which gives you the gradient there?

Two different substitutions of the same number $x = 1$, into two different expressions, for two different purposes. Putting $x = 1$ into $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$ and calling the answer the $y$-coordinate gives the point $(1,\,-3)$ and a tangent that is nowhere near the curve. No mark is attached to keeping the two apart.

Substitute $x = 1$ into $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$, not into $y$.
You have found that $\dfrac{dy}{dx} = -3$ when $x = 1$. Which one of these is that $-3$?
(A) the $y$-coordinate of $P$ (B) the gradient of the tangent at $P$ (C) the gradient of the normal at $P$

$\dfrac{dy}{dx}$ at a point IS the gradient of the curve there, and the tangent is the straight line with that gradient. The normal is a second step away. Naming the number correctly carries no mark and decides both of the remaining parts.$\dfrac{dy}{dx}$ ที่จุดหนึ่งคือความชันของเส้นโค้งตรงจุดนั้น และเส้นสัมผัสคือเส้นตรงที่มีความชันเท่านั้น · ส่วนเส้นตั้งฉากต้องคิดต่ออีกขั้น · การเรียกชื่อเลขให้ถูกไม่มีคะแนน แต่ตัดสินสองข้อย่อยที่เหลือ
The curve $y = 2x^2 - x + \dfrac{3}{x^2}$ has a point $P(1,\,4)$, and the gradient of the curve at $P$ is $-3$. Find the equation of the tangent to the curve at $P$.
Answershow ▾
$y - 4 = -3(x - 1)$, then rearrange to $y = mx + c$.
Part (c) wants the normal. The tangent has gradient $-3$. Which of $-3$, $3$, $\frac{1}{3}$, $-\frac{1}{3}$ is the gradient of the normal — and what does the word "normal" mean in one phrase?
Answershow ▾
The negative reciprocal turns the fraction over AND changes the sign, so $-3$ becomes $+\frac{1}{3}$, not $-\frac{1}{3}$. Doing only one of the two moves is the standard slip, and the word itself is worth no mark.negative reciprocal
Hence find the equation of the normal to the curve at $P(1,\,4)$, giving your answer in the form $ax + by = c$, where $a$, $b$ and $c$ are integers.

"Stationary" is a statement about the gradient, so it is an equation in $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$; the height of the point is never in $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$ at all.

"Nature" is asking for a word, not a number, and the second derivative answers it only when it is not zero. Nothing in the mark scheme warns that the test can fail; it simply never fails in the question in front of you.

Differentiate $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$ again, term by term, exactly as in question 4.
$\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} = 12x$, so at $x = -3$ it is $-36$. Which way round is the rule — does a NEGATIVE second derivative mean a maximum or a minimum? Picture the curve there before you answer.
Answershow ▾
A negative second derivative means the gradient is falling as you pass through, so the curve bends downwards — a hill. The A1 pays for the word "maximum" once it is written; nothing pays for knowing which sign gives which, and having the two the wrong way round is the commonest single error in the topic.
Using $\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} = 12x$, determine the nature of the stationary points at $x = -3$ and $x = 3$.

$\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} \gt 0$ means minimum; $\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} \lt 0$ means maximum — the sign convention itself, not the arithmetic, is where the mark is lost.
