Question 10 IS the exam question.
Integration · the definite integral and area under a curve

$\left[F(x)\right]_a^b$ means $F(b) - F(a)$: substitute the top limit, substitute the bottom limit, then subtract.
Part (b) needs a definite integral, but no limits are printed anywhere in the question. The stem says only that the curve meets the $x$-axis at $x = 2$ and $x = 7$. Why are those the limits — and if the question had not told you, which equation would you have solved to find them?

Limits are not given, and they are not measured off the picture: they are the $x$-coordinates of the points where the two boundaries cross. The mark scheme opens with $\int_{2}^{7}$ already written, so the step that produced the $2$ and the $7$ carries no mark at all.

You are about to get $\int_{2}^{7} f(x)\,dx = -\frac{125}{2}$. An area cannot be negative. Is the integral wrong? Sketch the curve between $x = 2$ and $x = 7$ and say what the minus sign is actually reporting.

An integral is a signed total, not an area; below the axis it counts negative. The fix is one pair of modulus lines, but only if you know why they are there — a student who assumes an arithmetic slip goes back and hunts through five correct lines. A negative definite integral over a region below the axis does not mean a negative area — take the modulus.

One integral is only safe while the curve keeps to one side of the axis. Cross in the middle and the positive piece eats the negative one, and the number that comes out is smaller than the area and looks perfectly reasonable. No exam question ever says "check for crossings first".
