A chord above the curve means the trapezium is bigger than the true strip of area underneath it — sketch a small piece of a convex curve with a chord across it if unsure. This is the mirror image of what happens for a concave curve.

Strips are the gaps and ordinates are the posts between them, so there is always one more post than gap: a fence of 5 panels needs 6 posts. Working with 5 ordinates is the classic wreck — the last column of the table never gets filled, the sum is short by one term, and the estimate is wrong from that point on. The same count decides the shape of the bracket: the two outermost ordinates belong to one trapezium each and appear once, and everything strictly between belongs to two and appears twice. Part (a) is A1 for the table values; counting the ordinates is what makes the table the right length and is never itself a mark.

(B) doubles $y_5$, which is an end — it belongs to one trapezium only, and counting it twice inflates the estimate by a whole $y_5$, here about $4.4$. (C) drops the halving: the area of one trapezium is $\tfrac{h}{2}(a + b)$, and forgetting the $2$ doubles the whole answer. A quick sanity check catches both: the region is roughly a $5$ by $3.7$ rectangle, so the answer should be near $18$, and $37$ or $20.8$ should look wrong before the marker sees them. The curve $y = \sqrt{2x + 9}$ is concave — it bends away from the $x$-axis, becoming less steep as $x$ increases — so each chord joining consecutive points on the curve lies BELOW the curve. The trapezium rule uses the area under those chords, so it UNDERESTIMATES the true area. This is part (c).

The word reason in the question is the whole instruction: the answer is one of two words and a marker cannot tell a decision from a guess, so the sentence is what is being paid for. (A) is the right word with nothing behind it and scores nothing. The reason has two links and both must be there — which way the curve bends, and where that puts the chords. A square-root curve rises but flattens as it goes, so it bends away from its chords and each chord passes underneath; the trapezia therefore leave out a thin sliver in every strip and the total comes out too small. Part (c) is B1, awarded for the direction and the reason together.

“Top minus bottom” is the rule, and the only work in it is finding out which is which — which cannot be read off the equations and does not need a sketch either. Pick any $x$ strictly between the two intersections, put it in both, and compare the two numbers; one test settles the whole integral. The order matters because reversing it changes the sign of everything that follows, and a negative area is the symptom, not the disease. Note also that a parabola opening upwards always sits below a line between two crossings, which is a useful thing to expect but not a substitute for the test. You are integrating with respect to $x$, so the limits must be values of $x$: the $dx$ at the end of the integral is the instruction telling you which coordinate to slice along. The $y$-coordinates were asked for by part (a) and have no further job; sliding $11$ into the top of the integral is a real and common slip, and it produces a number with no meaning. The other half of this decision is that part (a) is doing double duty — it looks like a separate question and is really the machinery that sets up part (b). Part (b) is M1 for the integration and A1 for $\tfrac{8}{3}$; the limits sit inside the M1.

An area is a size and cannot be negative, so a minus sign in the final line is information, not a nuisance: it says the integrand was written bottom minus top. The size is already right, so nothing has to be integrated again — but the fix must appear on the page as a stated line, because an answer of $-\tfrac{8}{3}$ labelled “area” is a wrong answer, and quietly rubbing out the sign with no reason is how a correct method turns into a fudge. The safe habit is to decide top and bottom before integrating, so the sign never appears.
