The law is $n\log a = \log(a^n)$ — a multiplier in front of a log becomes a power inside it.
Part (b) begins by turning $\log_{3}(x + 1) - \log_{3}(x - 1)$ into one logarithm. Which of these three is the law that does it, and what is each of the others?
(A) $\log a - \log b = \log(a - b)$ (B) $\log a - \log b = \log\left(\dfrac{a}{b}\right)$ (C) $\log a - \log b = \dfrac{\log a}{\log b}$

(A) and (C) are both inventions, and both are easy to disprove with numbers you know: $\log_{2}8 - \log_{2}4 = 3 - 2 = 1$, while $\log_{2}(8 - 4) = 2$ and $\dfrac{\log_{2}8}{\log_{2}4} = 1.5$. Only the quotient law returns $1$. The whole family works the same way: one level up outside the log becomes one level up inside it — add becomes multiply, subtract becomes divide, multiply becomes a power. Nothing else about the equation can move until the two logs are one, because there is no rule for undoing two of them at once. The base of the logarithm is a free choice, because the change-of-base rule makes every version the same number written differently — $\dfrac{\ln 31}{2\ln 3}$, $\dfrac{\lg 31}{2\lg 3}$ and $\tfrac{1}{2}\log_{3}31$ all equal $1.5628\ldots$. What is not free is where the $2$ goes: the power law brings the whole exponent down, so it is $2x\ln 3$, and dividing by $\ln 3$ alone leaves $x = 3.13$, exactly double. Solving the quadratic only finds two CANDIDATE values. The rejection is where the mark actually is — you must test each candidate in the original equation and state, in words, why the invalid one is thrown away; silently dropping it earns nothing.
Before solving $\log_{3}(x + 1) - \log_{3}(x - 1) = 1$, decide which values of $x$ the equation is even allowed to have. Write the two conditions that the insides of the logs impose, combine them into one inequality, and say which of $x = 0$, $x = 1$, $x = 2$ survives.

A logarithm only exists for a strictly positive number, so every log in an equation quietly adds a condition, and the strictest of them wins — $x \gt -1$ and $x \gt 1$ together mean $x \gt 1$. Here the solution $x = 2$ is safely inside, so nothing is thrown away; the habit pays on the questions where the quadratic hands you a second root that would need the log of a negative number, and where a rejection with a written reason is the mark. $x = 1$ is worth noticing separately: it makes $x - 1 = 0$, and $\log_{3}0$ does not exist either. Two models, two ways of plotting. Match each model to the pair of axes that turns it into a straight line: $y = kx^{n}$ and $y = ka^{x}$, against “$\lg y$ against $\lg x$” and “$\lg y$ against $x$”. Then say which model this question is about.

Take logs of both models and the difference is visible in one glance: in the first, the variable sits inside a log on the right, so the horizontal axis has to be $\lg x$; in the second the variable is already loose and multiplies $\lg a$, so the horizontal axis stays $x$. Choosing the wrong pair of axes does not produce a wrong straight line — it produces a curve, and every gradient read off it is meaningless. The question tells you which model you have by writing $y = kx^{n}$, and the phrase “$\lg y$ plotted against $\lg x$” confirms it. Nothing in the mark scheme pays for the match; the B1 is for $n$ and the M1 A1 for $k$.

Matching $\lg y = n\lg x + \lg k$ to $Y = mX + c$ pairs $Y$ with $\lg y$, $X$ with $\lg x$, $m$ with $n$ and $c$ with $\lg k$ — four pairings, and the only one that is a bare letter on both sides is the gradient. That is why $n$ can be written straight down with no working at all: the power in the original model is the gradient of the log-log line, unchanged and untransformed. The intercept is the one that is not bare, and that is the next decision. The intercept only ever gives you $\lg k$, never $k$ itself. The most common mistake here is stopping at $\lg k$ and writing that down as the final answer — you must undo the log, $k = 10^{\lg k}$, to actually answer the question.

A very common mistake: the gradient here is $\lg 2$, NOT $2$ itself. Because the base $2$ is now attached to $x$ (not to a power of $x$), taking logs brings down $\lg 2$ as the multiplier of $x$ — a different result from the $y = kx^n$ case, even though the method looks the same.

(A) $\lg 6$ (B) $6$ (C) $36$
Answershow ▾
The intercept of a log-log line is never the constant you want; it is the logarithm of it, so there is always one undoing left to do. Stopping at $\lg 6$ is the classic loss here — the working is finished, the answer is not. Undo it by raising the base to that power, $k = 10^{\lg 6} = 6$, and check it against the original model: $36 = 6 \times 6^{1}$, which closes the question. (C) mistakes a data point for a parameter; $36$ is one value of $y$, not the multiplier that generated it. Part (b) is M1 for reaching $\lg k$ and A1 for $k$; the M1 is the easy one and the A1 is the one that needs the last line.
