Integration · by parts, and an exact area
(a) Find $\displaystyle\int xe^{x}\,dx$.
(b) Hence find the exact area of the region bounded by the curve $y = xe^{x}$, the $x$-axis, and the lines $x = 1$ and $x = 3$.
For $\displaystyle\int xe^{2x}\,dx$, decide which factor should be $u$ and which should be $\dfrac{dv}{dx}$, then write down $\dfrac{du}{dx}$ and $v$.
Answershow ▾
Pick $u$ to be the factor that gets SIMPLER when you differentiate it, and $\dfrac{du}{dx}$ to be the factor you can already integrate. Here $x$ differentiates to $1$, while the exponential integrates to another exponential — that choice is what decides whether the question is doable at all.
Using $u = x$, $\dfrac{du}{dx} = 1$, $v = \dfrac{1}{2}e^{2x}$, apply $\int u\,dv = uv - \int v\,du$ to write down $\int xe^{2x}\,dx$, without simplifying yet.

$\int e^{nx}\,dx = \dfrac{1}{n}e^{nx} + c$; then substitute the upper limit, substitute the lower limit, and subtract — the same limit-handling the exact area needs later.
Integration by parts asks one question before it starts: which factor is $u$? For $\displaystyle\int xe^{x}\,dx$, choose between $u = x$ and $u = e^{x}$, then write the integral each choice leaves behind and say which one is easier than the one you started with.
Answershow ▾
Both lines are correct applications of the formula. Only one of them is progress: $x$ differentiates down to $1$ and disappears, while $e^{x}$ differentiates to itself forever. The test is always “which factor gets simpler when differentiated”, and the second factor must be one you can already integrate. The M1 pays for a correct use of the formula whichever way round you chose, so the wrong choice costs the rest of the question and nothing of its own.

Integrate the remaining $\int v\,du$ and never forget the $+c$ — this is part (a) of the exam question, complete.
Part (a) is $\displaystyle\int xe^{x}\,dx$ and part (b) is $\displaystyle\int_{1}^{3} xe^{x}\,dx$. One of them must carry $+c$ and one must not. Say which is which, and why the $+c$ makes no difference to the area even if you write it.

No limits means a whole family of antiderivatives, and the $+c$ is the family. Limits pick out a difference, and the constant cancels itself. Leaving $+c$ off part (a) loses a mark that is written down for it; carrying it into part (b) loses nothing but marks you as not knowing why. The A1 in part (a) says “$+c$” explicitly; nothing anywhere says which of the two integrals you are looking at.
The curve $y = xe^{x}$ meets the lines $x = 1$ and $x = 3$. Using the antiderivative from question 6, write down the area of the region bounded by the curve, the $x$-axis, and these two lines as a bracketed expression.
Answershow ▾
The area under a curve between two vertical lines is the definite integral between them — plug the antiderivative from part (a) straight into bracket notation.
Evaluate $\left[xe^{x} - e^{x}\right]_{1}^{3}$, and state the exact area of the region.
Answershow ▾
Substitute $x = 3$, substitute $x = 1$, subtract. Since $x \ge 1 \gt 0$ the curve never dips below the $x$-axis on this interval, so this value is already the area — unlike a curve that crosses the axis, there is no modulus to take.
An integral and an area are not always the same number. State the sign of $y = xe^{x}$ everywhere on $1 \le x \le 3$, and say what extra step the question would have needed if the curve had crossed the $x$-axis between the limits.
Answershow ▾
Below the axis an integral counts negative area, so a curve that crosses gives a number smaller than the region it bounds, and can even give zero. Here both factors are positive on the whole interval, so the integral IS the area and nothing extra is needed. Checking that takes one line. The A1 is for the number $2e^{3}$; the mark scheme never mentions the check, and on the day the curve does cross, the same $2e^{3}$ method quietly returns the wrong answer.

Once everything is written in terms of $u$, it is an ordinary power-rule integral — raise the power by 1, divide by the new power, then substitute the $u$-limits.
This question hands you the substitution, but the next one will not. Of $u = \sin x$, $u = \cos x$ and $u = \sin^{4}x$, which one turns $\displaystyle\int 2\sin^{4}x\cos x\,dx$ into a power of $u$ — and what is the one thing you look for in the integrand to decide?

$\cos x\,dx$ is exactly $du$, so it is absorbed and no $x$ is left. $u = \cos x$ gives $du = -\sin x\,dx$, and the integrand has $\sin^{4}x$, an even power that will not surrender a single $\sin x$ cleanly. $u = \sin^{4}x$ gives $du = 4\sin^{3}x\cos x\,dx$, which is not in the integrand either. The test is never the biggest lump; it is which lump has its own derivative standing next to it. The M1 pays for a correct substitution, not for finding it.$\cos x\,dx$ คือ $du$ พอดี จึงถูกกลืนหมด และไม่เหลือ $x$ เลย · ถ้าใช้ $u = \cos x$ จะได้ $du = -\sin x\,dx$ แต่ตัวถูกอินทิเกรตมี $\sin^{4}x$ ซึ่งเป็นกำลังคู่ ดึง $\sin x$ ออกมาตัวเดียวไม่ได้สะอาด · ถ้าใช้ $u = \sin^{4}x$ จะได้ $du = 4\sin^{3}x\cos x\,dx$ ซึ่งก็ไม่มีในโจทย์ · การทดสอบไม่ใช่การเลือกก้อนที่ใหญ่ที่สุด แต่คือก้อนที่มีอนุพันธ์ของตัวเองยืนอยู่ข้าง ๆ · M1 ให้กับการแทนค่าที่ถูก ไม่ได้ให้กับการหาว่าจะแทนอะไร

(A) keeps the $x$-limits under a $u$-integral, which is the single commonest lost mark in this topic: the limits belong to whichever letter the $d$ says. (C) has the right numbers the wrong way round, which flips the sign of the answer. The limits are found by putting each $x$-limit into $u = \sin x$ itself, and the smaller $x$ happens to give the smaller $u$ here only because $\sin$ is increasing on this interval — it is not a rule. The A1 pays for the final value; nothing pays for changing the limits, and everything after it depends on having done so.(A)

A half-converted integral is the most dangerous line on the page, because it still looks like an integral and will still produce a number. The check is mechanical: run your eye along the line and if a single $x$ survives — in the integrand, in the $d$, or on either limit — the substitution is not finished. The M1 is for the integral in $u$; the check that no $x$ is left is worth nothing and catches everything.
