(a) $f(3) = -4$, $f(4) = 12$, opposite signs   (b) root $= 3.4$ (1 d.p.)   (c) $h(3) = -4$, $h(4) = \frac{4}{3}$, but $h$ has an asymptote at $x = \frac{13}{4}$ so it is not continuous there — no root exists.
7 marks. Question 4 is part (a); questions 5 and 6 build part (b); question 8 is part (c).

(a) M1 $f(3) = -4$, $f(4) = 12$  A1 change of sign, and $f$ is continuous on $[3, 4]$ (it is a polynomial), so by the sign-change rule there is a root between $x = 3$ and $x = 4$.
(b) M1 decimal search: $f(3.3) = -0.733$, $f(3.4) = 0.624$, opposite signs, so the root lies in $(3.3, 3.4)$  A1 $f(3.35) = -0.072125$, same sign as $f(3.3)$, so the root lies in $(3.35, 3.4)$  A1 root $= 3.4$ (1 d.p.).
(c) M1 $h(3) = -4$, $h(4) = \frac{4}{3}$, opposite signs  A1 but $h$ is not continuous on $[3, 4]$ — it has an asymptote at $x = \frac{13}{4}$ — so the sign-change rule cannot be applied there; indeed $h(x) = \dfrac{1}{x - \frac{13}{4}} \ne 0$ for every $x$, so $h(x) = 0$ has no root at all.
