(a) Show that $l_1$ and $l_2$ intersect, and find the position vector of their point of intersection.
(b) Find the acute angle between $l_1$ and $l_2$, giving your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
Line $l_1$ has equation $\mathbf{r} = \begin{pmatrix}-2\\4\\-5\end{pmatrix} + \lambda \begin{pmatrix}2\\-2\\2\end{pmatrix}$, and line $l_2$ has equation $\mathbf{r} = \begin{pmatrix}-3\\-7\\-6\end{pmatrix} + \mu \begin{pmatrix}1\\3\\1\end{pmatrix}$. Two unknowns need two equations, so the third is spare — and spare is exactly what makes it a test. In three dimensions two lines usually miss each other; solving $x$ and $y$ only proves their shadows on the floor cross. Part (a) says “show that they intersect”, so the third component is the show. Deciding in advance that it is a check rather than a fourth thing to solve is what stops a student solving $z$ for a new $\lambda$ and getting two different answers.

“Do not intersect” and “skew” are not the same claim: parallel lines also fail to intersect. A line has no position as far as an angle is concerned: slide either line along itself and the angle does not change, which is why only the direction vectors matter. The modulus bars in (B) are what force the acute answer — a negative scalar product would otherwise give the obtuse partner, $180^\circ$ minus the one wanted. Here the product is already positive, so both formulas happen to agree and the decision leaves no trace. On the next question it will not.
