Implicit differentiation · the tangent to an implicit curve
A curve has equation $x^2 - 3xy + y^2 = 20$. The point $P(2,\,-2)$ lies on the curve.
(a) Find $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$ in terms of $x$ and $y$.
(b) Find the gradient of the curve at $P$.
(c) Find the equation of the tangent to the curve at $P$.

Product rule: $u = x$, $v = y$, so $\dfrac{d}{dx}(xy) = 1 \times y + x \times \dfrac{dy}{dx}$. The $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$ appears because $v = y$ needs the chain rule too, exactly as in question 1.

Sorting the terms first is what stops the two classic slips: differentiating $y^2$ to $2y$ and forgetting the $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$, and differentiating $xy$ to $y$ or to $x\dfrac{dy}{dx}$ instead of both. Every term containing a $y$ produces a $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$, and the $xy$ term produces one piece with it and one piece without. Counting them tells you in advance that two pieces will have to be collected. The M1 marks pay for the differentiated line; the sorting is free and decides all of it.

An implicit derivative names the gradient at a POINT, not at a value of $x$, because the curve can pass over the same $x$ more than once with different gradients — and this one does: above $P$ the other branch runs through $(2,\,8)$. The tangent takes the gradient exactly as the derivative gives it; the normal takes $-\dfrac{1}{m}$. Both rates in this question are measured against $t$, so $t$ is the letter everything must be differentiated with respect to — even though $t$ does not appear in the relation at all. That is what makes both $x$ and $y$ into functions of $t$ and gives every term its own rate. Differentiating with respect to $x$ is not wrong mathematics; it simply answers a different question. A number written into a relation before differentiating is a promise that it never changes, and $x$ changes at $2$ m/s.
